Instructions

We are working on the final debate of the year, and I'd like to ensure that you make slow and steady progress. Every week, I'd like you to post about your topic. I don't care what format you use in your posts, I simply want to see that you are working on and thinking about the issues. Posts can include questions you have, lines of research you plan on pursuing, summaries of or links to articles you have read, etc. It is not a competition about who writes the most. You do not have to cover everything you have done.

I would also like you to help your peers. To that end, please respond every week to one of your classmates' posts with criticism, questions, or suggestions. Again, don't worry about form. Try to use what you know about reasoning, logic, or research to point your classmates in the right direction.

As with last year's literature blog, please include your name in your post. I encourage you to create an account with Google; if you have one, you can sign in and post your comments using your own login and password. The standard login is posted on edline, in case you forgot it.

And, on NBC I watch the XXI Olympic Games hosted by Bob Costas.

Here is a brief outline that sums up my major points.

    1. Quote
"In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?"
    - Jesse Owens
    2. Topicality/Need Issue
    A. Many International Sporting Events -
    Olympics and World Cup
    B. Many problems -
    Sportsmanship, Illegal Drugs, Debt,
    Deaths, and War
    C. If we don’t fix this now things will get
out of hand and it will never get fixed
    3. I define International Sports and Do More
    Harm Than Good
    4. My values are that we should value good sportsmanship and rivalry and we should value people's lives and money.

    Then the Outlines become different

    Con -

    5. List the Positive Things About the International Sporting Events
    A. International Friendship (Example)
    B. It's fun for good sports and it gives
    them experience (Example)
    C. Allows Sponsors to Promote (Example)
    D. Makes hosting sight a bigger tourist
    attraction
    6. Contentions
    A. Drug and Steroid Usage Problem (Example)
    B. Bad sportsmanship (Example)
    C. Cost
    D. Deaths

    Pro -

    5. Negatives - Their are many negatives but they
    can be fixed easily.
    A. Sportsmanship (Plan; Practical/Workable)
    B. Drugs (Plan; Practical/Workable)
    C. Debt (Plan; Practical/Workable)
    D. Deaths (No Real Problem)
    E. Animal Abuse (Plan; Practical/Workable)
    6. Positives
    A. International Friendship (Example)
    B. It's fun for good sports and it gives
    them experience (Example)
    C. Allows Sponsors to Promote (Example)
    D. Makes hosting sight a bigger tourist
    attraction
    E. Gives countries Recognition
    F. Many International Athletes are good
    sports too (Examples)

I'm planing to find more examples, find evidence to back up anecdotes, and come up with more reasons to strengthen my argument.

Do you think my arguments are strong with the ken about my topic you have?
Do you have any suggestions or advice on reasons to back it up?
And did I use the word "ken" correct?

International Sporting Events Do More Harm than Good"
    3/4/10

So far on my debate, i have gotten 5 sources, 25 note-cards, and 2 outlines.

In my pro outline, my value premise was "world peace will never work" (My con is world peace)I think the value should be world peace will never work because i think this is the goal for the Olympics. They made it so the countries could be together. Most of my facts in this were not "statistics", but examples.I used examples of people taking drugs in the Olympics, racism, terrorism, and protests. Basically politics. I think this is too narrow though so i will work on the economic factor and the other factors. I think my main problem is that i focused on only on argument.

My con outline's value premise is world peace. As I said in my other paragraph, i think this is right because it's their goal.In this i show why i think this. some of my reasons are examples of sportsmanship, how they try hard to prevent drug use. Basically how they try so hard to make world peace. Also, this is narrow too, i need more info but that's easy.

    Questions:

Do you think my value as "world peace" will work?

Should I include the economic advantages and disadvantages as one of my main arguments, or just a little one?
    Thanks

    Answers:

Since Jordana's is the only one up while I'm writing this, I will answer her questions.

I think that you have a lot of good arguments (unlike me) but you seem to have many arguments that don't really matter. I'm not saying they are bad but if you want to shorten up your debate it is a good way to go. An example of this is in your pro outline. "animal abuse" I don't really think that matters in the debate. If you have too much length in your debate, taking out the arguments that don't matter is a good way to go.

    Balance Budget

I have now at least 20 note cards and 6 sources. I found one today that explains the GDP since WWII, but im not so sure how valid it is. I know there are better government run websites and i will keep looking for them. I have found sites that explains the government's problems with the budget in the past.
    Q. do you think that i should include history or not?

I have to work on my pro speech's persuasiveness. I tend to have trouble doing that from time to time.

    Balance Budget (Criticism)

I forgot to make a comment on someone.

Dhruv: your pro premise "world peace will never work", is a little vague, in at least what you wrote here. Does the Olympics really threaten world peace, it sounds like wars will break out the way you put it here.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Thomas -

I think that including history most likely would be great in a speech's outline. It would give a perspective and could show how balancing the budget has worked and how it has failed. That might help you come to a conclusion about the right way to balance the budget.

    Dhruv -

I agree with Thomas that it might not be broad enough but you could use the example of a "Soccer War" that started as a result of the world cup. I don't know how true that is, how reliable, or exactly what it means ,but it might be a good thing to research.

    Hope my comments help,
    Jordana

    Cap & Trade.

So far, i have about ten sources, thirty or so note-cards, and the outlines i handed in at the checkpoint. When i am looking for information, the stuff that comes up is essentially all just explaining what cap and trade is, so i am finding that i have to be very specific with my search, and then i get what i need.
for my con, i've looked up other ways to stop global warming, like carbon sinks & kyoto protocol .
QUESTION; is that a good idea? ^^.
it's kind of hard to argue there is no need to change, so i think that may be a good way to do it. because of that, it's hard to find sources saying that cap and trade is bad.

with my pro outline, i'm having more luck. i happened to find a good source that had what the plan of cap and trade is, so that takes up half of my plan. i'm really not sure how i would add a way to adapt cap and trade to america, but i'm still trying to find things with that.

and i didn't think we had to comment everyone else's this time, but since Dhruv, Thomas, & Jordana did, i guess i will.

Jordana - you have a lot of sources, which suprises me so early on in the debate, it's reaally good. I think your points are all pretty valid so that's good.

Dhruv- i liked how you said to jordana you have good points unlike me, but that's irrelevant. in a values debate let alone an Olympics-based one, examples may help prove your point more than statistics, but stats are still useful.

i know i only have to comment on one, but i feel like doing both :P okay, bye !

**i had to make a Gmail account for this. ha.

  7. Evaa:Democrats polocies are to blame for most of this country's current problems.

Okay first, I've stated surrent problems we have in the united states now. I've listed the thoughts that democrats have on those points, but i'm having trouble on finding WHAT they have done to help or not to help. I'm most definietly not having trouble finding statistics and sources on people who don't like the democrats. But that is part of my problem..some websites on opinions. I think the biggest problem i'm having is finding sources on how the democrats have helpes..i don't know why, but yeah. Maybe i'm just not looking hard enough. If anyone can just give me some advice on that, that would be nice. Yeah, so over all i'm getting the sources, and taking good notes on them, it's just not all coming together in my head and i have no idea how to fix that. Oh and my value is having the right of choice and having freedom of voice. I'm having trouble finding values on con. Any help on that would be nice too. thankssss.

    To jordana:

I think your going in the right direction and i like your value's alot. ...advice..um i'd probably agree with dhruv that you have things you don't need. Other then that, sounds good.

    Dhruv:

Looks like you need to look more into the value premise part. I like your arguements. Don't know what else to say.

    Thomas:

and it looks like you need to find more statistics and more information about youuur topic. And yeah include history but don't go over the top with it. Just a little.

    Nicole:

I think you have the right idea..and answer to your question..yeah use it. Sounds like a good idea, and a good point to make right?

alright that's ittt. answer my questions pleasse and thankyouuu

The Congress should find ways to balance the budget.
    March 5, 2010

So far I have both of my outlines, 8 sources, and 24 note cards. I have an argument to support both sides, but I need more evidence for the con side.

My argument for pro is that our budget deficit is too high and we need to balance the budget by lowering government discretionary spending and increasing government revenue (mainly by raising taxes).

On the other hand, my argument for con is that we shouldn't lower spending because that is one way the Great Depression occured. Also, government spending will keep the economy flowing and increase jobs.

Questions: One question I have is should I say in my con that there are signs of things that happened right before the Great Depression like natural disasters and lowering of spending?

Also I am having trouble finding sources to support my con argument. I only have two. Can anybody help?

Jordana-you have very clear and organized arguments but you should use evidence to support it that is neglected.

Dhruv-Unlike everyone else, I like your con value premise. I do agree that the olympics were made to create world peace. However, just like Jordana, you neede evidence.

Thomas-I do think that you should date back to history because it shows how we shoulld learn from our mistakes but I can't judge because you haven't said much at all about your argument yet.

Nicole-I like your con arguments and I agree that it would be hard to find good sources saying that cap and trade is bad.

Eva-You are saying that it is hard to find how democrats have helped but it is really easy to find how republicans have cause woe! lol

    P.S. Mr. J,
On edline, it says that this blog is due today so I think I deserve credit for doing it today.

for my con i have the criteria that only 1000 people have died in the past 8 years in Afghanistan.

We are making u.s. less safe by promoting terrorism

Also If we stop now 9/11 will just repeat itself

It is the worst time to leave, We have to kill Al-Qaeda then leave or all the money and men and women we have sacrificed will be fore nothing

We invade and bomb Afghanistan because they harbor terrorists and the only way to fight it is using military power

We kill Afghanistan men, women, and children, not because we want to take some innocent lives but because they brought this on them selves

For my pro my criteria is 227 billion dollars have been spent on the war in Afghanistan

Some experts say al-qaeda isn't even in afghnaistan which is the main reason we attacked

    I have 5 bib and 18 notecards

Commment:I don't care what people say i think your idea that world peace won't work dhruv is good because we don't live in a perfect world and nobody and anything is perfect not even a nation.

My 3 things that democrats or Republicans do bad are
    Health care
    Taxes
    And Seniors & Social Security

    Pro:
My value is responsibility. My Quote is "Whatever happens, take responsibility." Tony Robbins. My 3 things that are bad that democrats
    Taxes
    security
    foreign relations

    Healthcare

    Sources:

Most of my sources are from www.whitehouse.gov
I also have a couple from a blog website.
    I'm working on my sources.

    Notecards:

    I have 18 notecards.

    Outlines:

    Pro-

My need to change consists of the US being 37th on the list of healthcare, how much money we are spending on healthcare, why we have such bad healthcare, what healthcare is like at the moment, and what we need in the new healthcare bill.

My plan isn't quite there yet - and because of that my practical/workable & sid effects aren' either.

Obviously, I need to do more work and find more sources.

    Con:

My outline consists of the same need to change - and I need to fix that - and I need to come up wih a WAY better plan then the one I already have.

Overall, my debate isn NOT that wonderful.

    To Dhruv:

I do think that the economic advantages and disadvantages could play a big role in your outlines. You could say that countries put a lot of money into the Olympics - take China, for example, you could say that China spent a lot of money on their Olympics to make it so great. Also, maybe polution and energy usage to take part in your outlines. Also using China, you could say that their polution is already so high, they used all that electricity and fireworks, etc.

I also think that your value premise is good if you back it up enough.

    Over all, good debate.

    To Jordana:

I think that you should have shortened your blog a little more. It took me too long to read it. :)

I think you had enough sources and notecards.
I liked your arguement - I think that the problems you list with the Olympics Sportsmanship, Illegal Drugs, Debt,
Deaths, and War) are good if you give enough details about them and evidence that they are enough to talk about.

Although you did use the word "ken" correctly if you were giving it the synonym of knowledge, usually you would use it in another context- unlike the one you used.

However, I do think your arguements are strong with "ken" as long as you don't use "ken" to describe it.
